Length of Practicum/Internship: Fall 2025(or as otherwise determined by the requirements of your college/university)

Hours: 15-21 hours/week

About Us

The City Bar Justice Center (CBJC), an affiliate of the NYC Bar Association and provider of free civil legal aid services ( seeks a social work student for a practicum with the interdisciplinary, trauma informed client support structure that CBJC provides to support litigants representing themselves in federal court in a range of matters including employment discrimination, civil rights, and other matters. CBJC expands access to justice by providing high quality, free civil legal services that benefit more than 25,000 New Yorkers each year who lack resources to hire private counsel. Pro bono partnerships with law firms and corporate legal departments, as well as strategic partnerships with courts, community organizations, and other stakeholders offer key support to CBJC’s three dozen member team.

Social Work Practicum Description: The role of the social work practicum student will be to participate in supervised assistance to CBJC clients needing to access human and social services through appropriate referrals, and advocacy for public entitlements and other resources with systems and agencies where applicable. The social work student will work with a diverse population including immigrants, unhoused, LGBTQ+, veterans, elderly, pro se litigants pursuing civil rights and other federal claims, and individuals with a medical health diagnosis.

Major Learning Opportunities:

Learn by working under supervision to:

  • Help clients access human and social services through appropriate referrals (e.g. shelter, medical, and mental health care, public assistance)
  • Develop client service plans as needed
  • Advocate on behalf of clients for public entitlements and other resources with systems and agencies where applicable
  • Provide clients with short-term counseling, crisis intervention, and safety and risk management assessments
  • Facilitate psychosocial education for clients to assess/attend to their needs
  • Help provide client support by attending Court hearings as needed
  • Provide other client support duties and projects to be determined in collaboration with supervisor
  • Complete case notes in internal database in a timely fashion
  • Participate in all training, supervision, consultation activities, as well as program and agency staff meetings and trainings
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues and interdisciplinary teams

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled in an accredited social work program
  • First year or second year social work student
  • Bilingual in Spanish is a plus
  • Must have strong organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Must be willing and able to travel to midtown and lower Manhattan office locations
  • Must have a commitment to work from a strength based and trauma-informed perspective

This is an unpaid practicum opportunity. Consideration will be given to candidates who will secure academic credit or funding for this internship through their college or university. There should be no expectation or guarantee of employment with the City Bar at the end of the internship.
