Job Description

This role is responsible for the conceptual design, analysis, calculations, and development of protection settings for substation protection systems. The primary focus is on implementing new protective relaying solutions for both upgrades to existing infrastructure and new capital investments in the transmission system.

Additional responsibilities include providing support for protective relay settings, system troubleshooting, and maintaining standardized settings templates for protective devices such as transmission lines, transformers, buses, and capacitors.

The position also involves managing and responding to Protection System settings tasks using the team's planning tools. This includes coordinating requests from various internal groups such as Account Management, Distribution, Transmission Planning, System Performance, and other departments within PGO-Transmission. The candidate will support Transmission Capital project initiatives and be responsible for the quality assurance of OLRs (One-Line Reports) and protection system settings.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform engineering design, studies, and calculations for substation protection systems.
• Develop and implement protection settings for new and existing relaying systems.
• Maintain and update protection device settings templates.
• Manage incoming protection settings requests from multiple internal stakeholders.
• Support capital projects by delivering accurate, compliant protection system configurations.
• Conduct quality assurance (QA) for One-Line Reports and protection settings deliverables.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues with protection systems in collaboration with field and engineering teams.

Required Qualifications:

• Minimum 15 years of engineering experience with specialized expertise in protective relaying systems.
• Strong understanding of utility industry operations and standards.
• Proficiency with relevant engineering software tools, including: Aspen Relay Database, Aspen OneLiner, CymTCC, SEL-5010 and SEL-5030 AcSELerator,
• In-depth knowledge of NERC Compliance Standards, particularly: PRC-006, PRC-023, PRC-025, PRC-026, PRC-027, CIP-010, CIP-002, FAC-008
• Familiarity with a wide range of protective relays: electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based.
• Experience with relay protection schemes and logic for transmission lines, transformers, buses, breaker failure, and capacitor banks.
• Ability to perform technical evaluations and solve routine engineering problems with limited guidance.
• Skilled in preparing technical reports, documentation, and engineering calculations.
• Effective in planning, organizing, and managing work to support project and organizational goals.
• Proven ability to maintain accurate records and work collaboratively across teams.
