Job Description
Our client, a leader in the Design and Construction Management industry, is seeking an Interior Designer to join their team full-time, 5 days per week on-site, in Cerritos, California . The client works on large-scale projects in industries such as aviation, healthcare, education, and utilities. This project is in the public education space, specifically with the School District, so experience in that arena is preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Confer with clients to evaluate their furniture, fixtures, and equipment needs and develop efficient solutions within budget, schedule, and standards
- Develop space plans and interior architectural layouts; select furnishings, equipment, and interior finishes for schools in accordance with District and industry standards
- Participate in the development of District design specifications, including interior finish and electrical requirements; provide detailed furniture and equipment cost estimates to design teams
- Review and evaluate construction documents and visit project sites to confirm that space plans, design concepts, and selected furniture and equipment are safe, functional, and aesthetically appropriate, and meet all public health, safety, and welfare requirements—including fire and life safety code, accessibility, environmental, and sustainability guidelines
- Plan and conduct meetings and site visits to evaluate and review project needs and status
- Advise school personnel and Facilities staff on selection and procurement of furniture, equipment, and interior layouts and finishes
- Supervise assigned projects by coordinating and working with staff responsible for logistics and procurement of furniture and equipment to ensure completion on time and within budget
- Develop, schedule, coordinate, review, and receive furniture and equipment orders
- Provide specifications and scope of furniture and equipment to create procurement contracts
- Consult with manufacturers and vendors regarding custom product production; provide ideas, improvements, and designs to meet District needs and obtain best value
- Prepare detailed reports and records for furniture and equipment provisioning
- Manage and update lists of furniture, equipment, manufacturers, and vendors used by the District
- Create interior drawings and visual aids for review and approval
- Make recommendations regarding procedures, guidelines, and product standards for furniture and equipment
- Assist sites in the replacement of furniture and equipment
- Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
Experience:
- Minimum eight years of full-time, paid professional experience conceptualizing, planning, selecting, and coordinating interior layouts, building finishes, furniture, and equipment
- Experience in public agency or school construction/modernization is preferred
Education:
- Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor’s degree, preferably in interior design, architecture, or a related field OR
- Completion of 40 semester units (or equivalent) in interior design from a recognized institution and two (2) additional years of experience to compensate for education
Knowledge and Skills
- Principles of interior design
- Furniture and equipment specification (educational facilities preferred)
- Principles, practices, and techniques for space planning
- Strong understanding of color theory principles and their application in interior design
- Timeline and budget preparation
- Concepts and application of scheduling, procurement, and business data processing
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam
- Understanding of building codes, ADA, and fire/life safety codes as they relate to FF&E
- Project management principles and practices
- Professional interior design studio practices
- Ability to plan and design interior spaces and specify furniture
- Ability to read and interpret architectural plans, drawings, and specifications
- Operate computer-aided design software such as AutoCAD and Revit
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
- Create and deliver professional presentations showcasing design concepts and project details
- Work effectively with F+IG staff, facilities personnel, school administrators, and staff
- Operate computers and peripheral devices
- Commute to job sites and facilities as needed
Logistics
- Hours: 40 hours per week

Compensation for this position will be determined based on several factors, including the scope, complexity, and location of the role; market labor costs; and the candidate’s skills, education, training, credentials, and experience, as well as other employment conditions. Full-time consultants are eligible for benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) contributions, along with any PTO, sick leave, or other benefits required by applicable state or local laws where you reside or work.
